Relations between the Bhumjaithai Party and the ruling Democrats have reached breaking point over the forced resignation of Manit Nopamornbodee as deputy public health minister, but the minority coalition member cannot afford to quit, a Bhumjaithai source told Bangkok Post on 10/01/10.

This was because Bhumjaithai needed to handle budget allocations under the Thai Khem Khaeng economic stimulus scheme. The party also needed to be sure it had all the resources to prepare for the next general election, the source said.

Democrat deputy leader Witthaya Kaewparadai quit as public health minister on 29/12/09 to take responsibility for a procurement scandal, one day after an independent panel headed by Banlu Siripanich, a former deputy permanent secretary for public health, alleged there was mismanagement of an 86 billion-baht budget.

The armed forces, which control about half the nation’s radio stations, want more say in the management of other stations. Military pressure is behind a Lower House committee’s decision to add another step to the selection of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, sources say.

The committee working on the bill to set up the NBTC has added a new selection process to help make sure men in uniform are represented on the commission, a committee source, who declined to be named, told the Bangkok Post on 06/01/10.

Mass-transit plans suffer from political meddling

Political interference to reap benefits from the multibillion-baht mass-transit project is likely to hold back investment progress, according to The Nation on 08/12/10.

The daily quoted a Transport Ministry source as saying that there had been attempts by politicians to change some project details in order to allocate benefits for their interest groups.

Since the launch of the 2004-2009 Bangkok Mass Transit Master Plan, for seven routes with a total length of 236 kilometres, the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning has been able to construct just over 39km of rail lines.
